Plea in Madras High Court to conduct jallikattu in stadium

The judge directed Gandhi to get instructions and also directed the petitioner to submit a fresh representation.

Chennai: Madras high court has received a bizarre plea seeking direction to the authorities to allow the conduct of jallikattu at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai.

The petitioner C. Seemaisamy, President, Tamilanin Parampariya Veerajallikattu Association, Natham Taluk, Dindigul District has submitted that awareness must be created among the people regarding the importance of jallikattu.

The association submitted representation to the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu expressing their intention to conduct jallikattu at Jawaharlal Nehru Sports Academy (Nehru Stadium) in May 2017.

Assuring that necessary payment would be made and rules and regulations prescribed by the authorities would be followed, he also sent another representation to the authorities on April 13, 2017.

When the matter came up for hearing before Justice K. Kalyanasundaram, the additional government pleader P. Sanjay Gandhi submitted that the government is not against conducting jallikattu but only to the place where the petitioners want to conduct.

The judge directed Gandhi to get instructions and also directed the petitioner to submit a fresh representation to the authorities by mentioning the correct date of conducting jallikattu and posted the matter for further hearing to June 2, 2017.

Meanwhile, another vacation judge has granted bail and anticipatory bail to more than 50 agitators of jallikattu against whom the cases were registered already by the state police in various police stations.
