Odisha: Transgender eyes Rajya Sabha seat
Bhubaneswar: A transgender named Meghna Sahoo has expressed interest to be elected to Rajya Sabha of the Indian Parliament.
Accompanied by a few transgenders in a procession, Meghna on Thursday purchased the nomination papers form from the polling officer of the Odisha Legislative Assembly.
“I want to be the candidate for the Rajya Sabha bypolls to raise the transgender issues in the Parliament. No government is sympathetically considering our legitimate demands,” said Meghna. A graduate, Meghna is highly educated who is also currently working for socio-economic development of women and underprivileged children in the state.
One post in Rajya Sabha is lying vacant after Biju Janata DAL (BJD) MP Bishnu Charan Das resigned from his post in March.
While BJD supremo Naveen Patnaik has already announced Pratap Deb as the party’s candidate in the bypoll, other political parties are also keen on projecting their leaders as the candidate to occupy the seat in Rajya Sabha.
