Not enough schools for boys in Kozhikode

Only option left are private schools that charge big bucks as school fees.

Kozhikode: Another academic year is around the corner but the education scenario in Kozhikode seems not to have changed. The city is yet to have enough schools for boy students whether in a Government or in an aided school.

The only option left are private schools that charge big bucks as school fees.
In Kozhikode education district, there are a total of 67 schools, of which 16 are located within the city. Of these, 9 schools are exclusively meant for girls while only 3 are meant for boys. In Kozhikode city, only four schools under Government and aided sector are following co- education, which is too little to meet the demand of boy students joining schools every year.

“Even though the Central Government issued orders to convert all single-sex schools to co- education pattern, we are yet to follow it as there are several technical issues involved in it”, said A Pradeep Kumar MLA.

But already in the District, a few schools including the Government Boys HSS and Madapally Boys HSS have already been converted into mixed schools thus setting an example for other such schools in the district. “Soon we will hold a discussion among school managements and also the Government on converting to co-education system”, he further added.

“My son has to be admitted to first standard this year and a year back, I started the search for a good school for him”, said Anoopa Anoop, a resident of Westhill- Chungam. “Since I don’t have the option of admitting him to a private school due to the huge fee structure, I can only admit him to a Government-run school or an aided school. But since there are very few options for boys, I am worried,” she said. She also added that the school admission status for girls versus boys were 60:40.
