Hyderabad: Helping Hand Foundation, a city-based NGO, has undertaken a survey in Old City to know the socio-economic conditions of the people. The survey began on May 2 in the entire south zone; and 5,000 houses were surveyed till now.

The basic aim of the survey is to seek details of individuals suffering from various health problems and also those who are debt-ridden, said Mujtaba Askari, founder of the foundation. He noted, “We are trying to understand the health and other socio-economic parameters of the minority population in the Old City.”

“In the preliminary data results obtained from the survey, it is noted that the minority population of the Old City areas, particularly in the urban slums, are living below the poverty line (BPL) and are debt-ridden. Both these parameters are tightly interwoven and are having a huge negative impact on the other socio economic aspects of life, like education, employment, women empowerment and well- being of the families,” Mr. Askari said. “We are looking for details from individual households on the incidence of disease in each household.”
