Vice-Chancellor blows whistle on Kerala universities

Dr Ramachandran told DC that a court-monitored inquiry only could bring out all the truth.

Kochi: In a startling post on Facebook, the vice-chancellor of Kerala University of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences (KUFOS) Dr A. Ramachandran on Thursday said that there are over 200 cases of UGC and court order violations in universities in Kerala.

Several associate professors and professors have retired, and several others are continuing in service without even having minimum qualifications prescribed by UGC, the Facebook post says.

“Few have even occupied the positions of VCs; some are also trying to occupy that position. It is learned that maximum violation is in KAU.”

Dr Ramachandran has further said that according to a rough estimate, over Rs 100 crore is lost from the exchequer due to these illegal promotions under Career Advancement Scheme (CAS) of the UGC.

“If a public enquiry is constituted, I am willing to provide all the available information with me,” the VC said adding he is struggling to rectify the illegal promotions in his university but with great difficulty.

“The public can examine how many now claiming to be professors and drawing over Rs 200,000 are really eligible to occupy this position. This sort of professors not only loot public money by hook or crook but also infect the new generations with their lack of knowledge.”

Later Dr Ramachandran told DC that a court-monitored inquiry only could bring out all the truth.

“These violations include that of court orders also, and hence such an inquiry is better rather than one by the government or the chancellor,” he said. He said that nearly 100 violations would be to the credit of Kerala Agricultural University alone.

“I have spotted one violation in my university and follow-up action is underway,” he said adding the violators in the cadre of VC should also be identified through a probe.

“This is at the root of the degeneration of the higher education system in the state.”
