Kochi’s ‘new’ flyover to shut for repairs

Mishaps due to vehicles applying sudden brake to escape potholes were on the rise.

Kochi: The Palarivattom flyover, constructed by the Roads and Bridges Development Corporation (RBDCK), is set to be closed for traffic for one-and-a-half months to facilitate “major repair” just three years after its launch, exposing quality of construction.

“The 750-metre long flyover along the NH 66 will be closed for traffic from April 13 to May 30 to facilitate maintenance works. Among others we’re rectifying the uneven surface of the stretch,” said a senior RBDCK official.

The flyover, constructed at cost of Rs 39 crore, developed potholes and the surface became uneven within months of opening on October 2016. Mishaps due to vehicles applying sudden brake to escape potholes were on the rise.

“They can fill potholes but the gutters keep developing, putting into question the work quality,” said Sony Mathew, a resident of Palarivattom.

“Drivers not familiar with the terrain hit brakes suddenly, posing risk to vehicles behind.”
