T Harish Rao visits project site unannounced

The Rs 5,000-odd crore project is slated to be completed by August 2017 and provide irrigation to 3.65 lakh acres.

Hyderabad: Irrigation minister T. Harish Rao on Tuesday morning made a surprise visit to Mahatma Gandhi Kalwakurthy Lift Irrigation scheme II and III in Nagarkurnool district to oversee the progress of works.

The Rs 5,000-odd crore project is slated to be completed by August 2017 and provide irrigation to 3.65 lakh acres.

Mr Rao, who has been visiting various irrigation projects in the state to ensure they are completed as per the deadline, reportedly found it difficult to inspect the projects due to presence of a large number of party workers and locals during pre-announced visits.

“To avoid the crowds, the minister, without informing his own staff, took ENC and left for Kalwakurthy early Tuesday morning,” one of Mr Rao’s close aides said.

The minister spent the day inspecting the Lift II at Jonnalaboguda and Lift III at Gudipalli and holding discussions with project staff to ensure they were completed as per the deadline. Health minister Laxma Reddy, Planning Board vice-chairman Niranjan Reddy and local MLAs were present.
