Distance education bodies to seek UGC nod for course admission
Chennai: University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed the distance education institutions to not initiate the admission process for the coming academic year without its prior approval for the courses.
The ministry of human resource development last year issued a notification saying all degrees, diplomas, certificates awarded through distance mode will be recognized for the purpose of employment under the central government, provided they have been approved by UGC.
“All institutions, which were recognised in the previous academic year, were asked to send their course details and proposals for the new programmes scheduled to start from next academic year,” said a professor from the Tamil Nadu Open University.
“UGC recognition is good and our students can get employment all over the country and even outside of the country. UGC wants to review the distance mode courses and it is only a routine affair to seek details for the continuation of the recognition,” he said.
UGC has asked all 143 institutions and universities to send details before April 25. The admission process should not be initiated before obtaining specific approval from UGC or in anticipation of approval of the submitted proposal.
It also warned that the submission of the proposal should not be perceived as a continuation of recognition till the final decision is conveyed.
