Blind spots' pose danger to pedestrians

Young adults in the age group of 18-45 years accounted for 72.1 percent of victims during the year 2017.

Hyderabad: The recent incident where an 11-year-old child came under the wheels of a school bus when he bent down in front of the bus to pick up his water bottle highlighted the blind spots of buses.

Greater awareness of these blind spots should be created, road safety experts say. The front of the bus is the most dangerous zone; one should never cross from in front of a bus. Wait till the bus moves ahead so that you have a clear view of the traffic.

K. Rajashekar Reddy, traffic volunteer in Society for Cyberabad Security Council (SCSC) who works in Tech Mahindra, said, “Children should be taught about how to use the road. All buses have blind spots where the driver can’t see. Children should never cross the bus after getting down. Please wait till the bus leaves so that you have a clear view of the traffic.”

Vinod Kanumala of the Indian Federation of Road Safety said, “Drivers of heavy vehicles don’t have a clear view of some spots like the front lower portion and the back of the vehicle.”

Another dangerous practice he says, is riding on the footboard of the bus. Though people know this is dangerous, they still do it.
