Bengaluru: Sacked professor gets social media support

Professor Tellis said on Saturday that he has received more than a 100 friend requests from students on his social media account.

Bengaluru: St Joseph's College professor and LGBT rights activist Ashley Tellis, who was recently sacked by the management is reportedly getting support from students.

Several students want the college to withdraw his termination arguing that St. Joseph’s College was known for openness and liberal approach.

Professor Tellis said on Saturday that he has received more than a 100 friend requests from students on his social media account. "Messages of support have been pouring in from students through private Facebook messages," he posted on his FB wall.

Students upset
Deccan Chronicle spoke to several students and they opined that the whole controversy was unwarranted and would affect the college’s image. "Prof Tellis was a good professor. St.Joseph College is known for promoting liberal ideology and its students are known for their social activism. It is sad that one of the professors is now a victim,” said a student who wished to be anonymous.

"Recently when city witnessed a series of protests in support of transgenders, gay rights, several students from the college had participated. Now they are busy holding protests in support of manual scavengers and pourakarmikas. It was the St. Joseph's College which was providing voice to the voiceless. But now things are moving in the opposite direction,” said another student.
