More Kozhikode youngsters addicted to narcotics
KOZHIKODE: There has been a steep rise in youngsters getting sucked into the consumption of narcotic products and in Kozhikode, according to the Narcotic Cell of the police. Narcotic cases registered in the district over five months have already crossed the total number of cases registered in 2013, which is being attributed to either a massive explosion of drug rackets in the district or the negligence in law enforcement.
Narcotic cases registered in the District during 2015 were 363, showing a steep rise from the cases registered during 2014, which was 192. In comparison, in 2013, only 97 cases of narcotics were registered. In January and February alone during 2016, 101 cases were registered within the city limit alone.
“It was just two years ago that narcotic awareness activities in the District was started due to the increase in cases here”, said Narcotic cell Assistant Commissioner MK Santharam. Over the years, the style and trend of drug use flowing into the District has gone up drastically and that has led to new ways of awareness for the public especially among students and youngsters.
Our major concern is the advent of high- end party drugs like cocaine, LSD, nitrazepam, buprenorphine and Crystal Meth. Among the cases registered, more than 75 percent stick to the sale and use of Ganja that induces mild intoxication among users, who are mostly migrant laborers. The investigation over the cases registered identified that most of these products came to the city mainly from Bengaluru and Goa and the major carriers were students .
The District Narcotic wing started their three-month-long anti-narcotic awareness drive on Friday in the premises of the Commissioner’s Office. Seminars, short film screening, lectures and detailed counseling will be some of the events in the pipeline as part of the campaign.
