Chennai: Three policemen shunted out for attacking farmer

The incident occurred on March 4.

Chennai: Three policemen were transferred from Papanadu police station in Thanjavur on Friday in connection with the thrashing of a farmer who had allegedly defaulted in repaying loan obtained from a private finance firm. The incident occurred on March 4.

The transfer comes in the wake of Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa ordering the IG, Central zone, N. K. Senthamarai Kannan, to inquire into the matter. She also recommended the issue to Election Commission for further action.

Head constables Kumaravel and Raja and constable Yesuraj were transferred to armed reserve while a departmental inquiry has been ordered against the inspector. Police claimed the action followed a court order while farmer G. Balan said he had never received any notice for defaulting repayment.

“Three policemen were transferred out pending inquiry. We will have to see the court order and find out if the action by policemen was beyond the order. If they had done something wrong, they will certainly face action,” said Senthamarai Kannan.
