KOZHIKODE: A group of Irish authors came down to Kozhikode for a heritage walk on Saturday evening. They arrived here to attend the literature festival and on the third day, visited Mishkal Mosque, Kuttichira, Jama Ath Mosque and Muchundi Mosque with Capt. Ramesh Babu of NIRDESH, narrating the history of these heritage monuments. They also visited the traditional Tharavads of Irumanam, Kunjeerambalam and the Jifri House of Pookoya Thangal.
While they found all these structures impressive, the Irish authors were taken in for a pleasant surprise when they ended their walk at the Palliveedu Tharavad on Thangal’s Road. They were enthralled by a spirited performance of traditional songs and dance, put up by the students of Calicut Girls High School.
The performance started with Mappilappattu, by Mubina and Liyana, followed by an Arabic group song by Tamanna Zain and party. It reached a crescendo with an enthralling Oppana by Amal Rafeeq and party. The rhythmic performance, synchronised to captivating music was thoroughly enjoyed by the Irish delegation who clapped along with the children. The hour-long performance ended with Mehandi (Mylanchi) by Dahsha and Fajira.
Appreciating the intricate designs made by these girls, even a few Irish gentlemen got their pals decorated! The evening ended with a sumptuous meal consisting of Biryani, Pathiri, Muttamala and other local cuisines, also prepared by the Calicut Girls High School cookery club.
The Irish delegation was delighted to note that Calicut Girls High School has been winning the first place in Oppana for more than 20 years, at the state youth festival. Members of the Irish delegation, like Les Wicks, Paddy Bushe, Amanda Bell and famous Irish author Buis Kerry, personally congratulated the girls. The entire event was coordinated by P.V. Hassan Koya of Palliveedu, Management Committee members and teachers of Calicut Girls High School.
