NHRC notice to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital on Ahamed death
Thiruvananthapuram: National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notices to Delhi Police and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital, Delhi, seeking their explanations on allegations of “unethical and inhuman” treatment meted out to late IUML leader E. Ahamed. The commission has directed the Delhi Police Commissioner and superintendent of RML Hospital to give their responses within four weeks.
The NHRC observed that hospital authorities' act of not permitting Ahamed’s children to see him was a serious matter. The IUML leader’s death was declared at RML just hours before Finance Minister Arun Jaitely presented the Union Budget in Lok Sabha. The opposition parties had alleged that Ahamed had died a day earlier but under instruction from the Centre the news was held back to ensure smooth presentation of budget. It is alleged that Ahamed was needlessly kept on life support system even after his death as the authorities wanted to hide the fact.
Muslim League leaders Syed Bafaki, P K Basheer and Parakkal Abdulla had approached the NHRC with serious allegations against RML and Delhi Police. The Commission examined their petition in detail and issued notices to the two parties. Ahamed was shifted from ICU to ventilator without the consent of the children and relatives. The declaration of death was delayed. Moreover, the RML authorities and police behaved badly with the children and relatives of the late union minister.
