Gynaecologist to head Niloufer kids' hospital
Hyderabad: For the first time, Niloufer Hospital has a gynaecologist as its superintendent. Till now, only doctors from the paediatric department were appointed as superintendents. Dr K. Shailaja took over as the superintendent of the hospital on Saturday morning. She said that she will try to streamline the hospital and follow proper protocols for protecting the health of all mothers.
Dr K. Shailaja said, “Normal deliveries are going on at the hospital and only C-sections have been stopped. We want to create confidence in our patients and ensure that protocols are followed.” The gynaecology unit at the Niloufer Hospital is small. The paediatric unit is bigger. As a result since many years only paediatricians were being appointed as superintendents. But with five maternal deaths occurring recently, the government has decided to appoint a gynaecologist to the post.
Meanwhile, doctors at Niloufer Hospital said the transfer of resident medical officer Dr Usha Rani was justified as the resident medical officer had given a long rope to many senior doctors. A senior doctor on condition of anonymity said, “The government must find out the exact cause for the deaths. It is very important as all factors like post-partum bleeding, ineffectiveness of medicines and lack of blood in the blood bank have to be addressed. Merely transferring doctors will not solve the problem.”
The doctors also stated that the central sterilisation unit was not working properly and stringent measures were required to streamline the department and make it effective. There have also been constant complaints that at night senior doctors who are posted on duty are not present. A junior doctor on condition of anonymity said, “The night duties of senior doctors are not regular. This leads to panicky situations as only post-graduates are available at the hospital at night very often.”
