Campaign to convert Veda Nilayam to Jayalalithaa memorial

The sprawling 24,000 square feet bungalow that is valued at Rs 90 crore was very close to the late chief minister's heart.

Chennai: Two days after announcing that the Poes Garden residence of late J Jayalalithaa will be converted into a memorial, CM O Panneerselvam on Saturday launched a signature campaign for the same.

Kicking off the campaign, Mr Panneerselvam placed his signature on the petition that seeks to convert the 24,000 square feet bungalow, where the V K Sasikala is currently staying, into a memorial for the late chief minister.

Amid thunderous applause and slogan shouting, he also appealed to people to carry forward the signature campaign and endorse it in large numbers to realise the dream of converting the landmark ‘Veda Nilayam’ Poes Garden residence into a public memorial.

Panneerselvam had on Thursday said ‘Veda Nilayam’, — the sprawling bungalow in the city’s plush Poes Garden where J Jayalalithaa lived all her life — will be converted into a memorial for the departed leader.

“Poes Garden residence of late Amma will be made a memorial. This is the first step of the struggle to declare it a memorial. We will ensure that the residence is converted into a memorial for late Amma so that lakhs of people can come and relive their memories about the late leader,” he had said.

81, Veda Nilayam, the iconic address that was the power centre of Tamil Nadu politics for nearly three decades, was bought in 1967 by the late Chief Minister’s mother Sandhya. The sprawling 24,000 square feet bungalow that is valued at Rs 90 crore was very close to the late chief minister’s heart.
