One-way rule to curb traffic woes in Guntur

The police department will also introduce alternative parking system in the prime and commercial areas of the city.

GUNTUR: Paid parking and one-way rule will be introduced to resolve increasing traffic problems in Guntur city.

Traffic largely increased in Guntur city in view of the new capital Amaravati activity. The public are facing difficulties due to frequent traffic jams and the increased visits of ministers and other VIPs to the region.

The Guntur Municipal Corporation is planning to introduce paid parking and one-way traffic norms to reduce the traffic jams. The police department will also introduce alternative parking system in the prime and commercial areas of the city.

Students, G. Purna, N. Mahidhar and others lamented that they have to start at least 30 minutes before to reach their college which is 2 km away from Brodipeta.

They said that as Brodipeta and Arundalpeta became prime commercial areas in the city, all the complexes are turning cellars into shops to get good income and this is forcing the public to park their vehicles on the roads leading to traffic jams.

They alleged that majority of hotels, restaurants, super markets, modern shops and educational institutions in Brodipeta do not have any parking place.
So the GMC and police should initiate action against violators to regulate the traffic.

The GMC recently conducted a meeting with the police officials and decided to implement paid parking and introduce one-way rule.

The Guntur-Amaravati Road from BR Stadium to old bus stand has to be widened and the GMC is planning to use the area for paid parking.

Besides this, the old market building near GMC office was demolished and this place would be used for paid parking. Some other places would also be marked for paid parking to regulate the traffic in the city.

The GMC found 100 cellars violating the norms and issued notices to them to clear the encroachments.

GMC commissioner S. Nagalakshmi said that the GMC staff will demolish illegal structures if the violators fail to remove them.

She added that the GMC will shift hawkers from the busy commercial centres and would mark them as red zones to regulate the traffic.
