Gandhi hospital to accept only emergency cases

The circular also asked doctors to discharge the patients currently under treatment in the hospital’s wards if their condition was stable

Hyderabad: Gandhi Hospital, in anticipation of an influx of Covid19 patients, has decided to scale down its admissions and would accept only emergency cases.

On Tuesday, the medical superintendent Dr Raja Rao issued a circular that said there was oral instructions from the director of medical education to suspend all elective admissions to the hospital. The circular also asked doctors to discharge the patients currently under treatment in the hospital’s wards if their condition was stable.

No staff member will be allowed to avail leave, it said, adding that the previously sanctioned leaves stood cancelled.

DME, Telangana, Dr Ramesh Reddy, however tweeted later, “All the services in govt hospitals in Telangana are running as usual, the Covid-related admissions are very minimal. Elective services are not stopped.”

In response, the GH superintendent clarified that the hospital was not being turned into a Covid-only centre. “All emergency cases, including Covid and non-Covid cases, will be admitted,” he said.

“The decision to scale down the number of elective cases is to create more beds for Covid patients. Severe cases currently undergoing treatment will continue to be treated at the hospital itself. Only patients who are stable will be discharged.”

As on Tuesday evening, 71 Covid patients and around 1,000 non-Covid patients were being treated at the hospital.
