CHENNAI: The state legislative Assembly on Thursday tabled a bill seeking to extend the term of special officers in local bodies for a further period of six months. The bill tabled by the local administration minister S.P. Velumani in the Assembly, amid opposition by the DMK and its allies read that the posts of mayors, municipal chairmen will be directly elected by the public through direct elections.
No elected councillor will contest for the post of mayors and municipal chairmen; the bill reads which means that the state will elect the direct mayors for its 12 corporations.
Earlier the Assembly in January and June last year extended the term of special officers for a period of six months.
Health minister C. Vijayabhaskar also tabled a bill seeking amendments into the Tamil Nadu Dr M.G.R. Medical University under which the process of selecting a vice-chancellor has to be commenced four months before the occurrence of the vacancy in the office of the VC.
The bill also notified the required qualifications for the aspiring VC which includes that a VC applicant should have been a distinguished academician for ten years and should have been a director or head of any medical institution of national importance.
Bills related to amendments to the tender transparency act and local authorities entertainment tax act 2017 were also tabled by deputy chief minister O. Paneerselvam and local administration minister S.P. Velumani.
