Thiruvananthapuram: A unique Sufi painting exhibition has opened in the Museum Auditorium in the city.
“Sufism: Exhibition of Paintings” by Sapgreen group of artists will conclude on Thursday. On display are 50 paintings by 14 artists of Sapgreen with each artist contributing more than one work.
“The aim is to bring art closer to common people who can enjoy like any other popular medium,” said R. Satheesh, an exhibitor.
“This venture is one of a kind, infusing Sufism into paintings so that everyone can enjoy the art form.” Sufism, according to him, uses music and dance as a form of devotion but paintings are not mainstream.
The group conducted its first Sufism painting workshop on Jan 18, in Madhu-vanam, Puliyarakonam. All of the paintings exhibited are from two workshops it conducted on the theme of boundless universal love and awareness as represented by Sufism.
The group started in 2016 has artists from all over Kerala and from different walks of life. Both the workshops were in Madhuvanam. “Artists with decades of experience and also by a couple of amateur painters created these works," said Mr Satheesh.
Perumbadavam Sreedha-ran, chairman of Kerala Sahitya Academy, inaugurated the show followed by a performance by Ashraf Hydrose. Higher education minister K.T. Jaleel will deliver a talk on Sufism and Secularism at 4:30 pm on Tuesday.
