State ready for panchayat polls
Hyderabad: The state government on Monday informed the Hyderabad High Court that it was ready to make arrangements to hold the gram panchayat, which were due told be held in August after the completion of their tenure.
Additional Advocate General J. Ramachander Rao reported the government's decision to a division bench comprising Chief Justice Thottathil B. Radhakrishnan and Justice S.V. Bhatt, while hearing of a writ petition filed by the Telangana State Election Commission.
The SEC had sought a direction to the state government to extend its co-operation in holding gram panchayat elections in a fair manner.
Mr Ramachander Rao told the court that the government was ready to provide infrastructure, police and staff to assist the commission conduct the elections in a smooth manner.
After recording the AAG’s statement, the bench stated that the state government has to inform the commission of its stand as early as possible, and sought a counter affidavit to that effect. The case was adjourned for three weeks .
Earlier, a single judge from the High Court on October 11 had ordered the SEC and government to hold the panchayat elections within three months, in response to petitions in the court against appointing special officers to gram panchayats.
Based on the single judge order, the SEC approached to High Court stating that it was ready to conduct elections but wanted the government’s co-operation.
