Yarada beach road in shambles

50 kids hurt in mishap on the road recently.

Visakhapatnam: The Yarada beach in Vizag has emerged as one of the most beautiful and crowded beaches. But the 4.2 km long approach road to Dolphin’s Nose in Yarada beach is in pathetic shape and dangerous for motorists. Thanks to the apathy of the AP government, the Yarada approach road still wears a weary look with potholes, damaged side walls, and is strewn with liquor bottles, debris and it doesn't have a single street light.

Neither GVMC nor VUDA came forward to repair, develop or maintain the approach road. The tourism department talks about the beauty of Yarada Beach and Dolphin’s nose hills. But, they are least bothered by the authorities request to maintain the approach road. There have been several road accidents on this stretch of the road. “It gets worse at night,” says P. Sunil Kumar, a motorist, who regularly travels on this road.

As the road has turned dangerous for motorists, the officials of APSRTC are also scared to ply buses from Vizag to Yarada beach. There is an urgent need to widen the road, construct parapet walls, set up warning boards and install other signs for safety on the ghat road opined the authorities.

Saturday’s accident on the Yarada ghat road in which over 50 students of a private school were injured should be a wake up call for the district administration. The road is in dismal condition and safety of motorists is a concern on the road. “We will submit a report to the District Collector about the road condition,” said a senior officer with Road Transport Authority.

Sources said that the road is important to people visiting the beach as well as those residing in residential quarters of the Indian Navy on the hilltop. No one is interested in repairing the road. We are in the process of estimating the work requirement and will take up the repair works in the coming days said GVMC commissioner M. Harinarayanan.
