Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology students stage rally

Fifty students of CBIT held rallies at Basheerbhagh and Mehdipatnam demanding a rollback of the fee hike.

Hyderabad: Fifty students of Chaitanya Bharathi Institute of Technology (CBIT) held rallies at Basheerbhagh and Mehdipatnam demanding a rollback of the fee hike. Students also plan to boycott classes on Monday.

One student Avinash Vemula, who took part in the protest, said, “We want to talk to the Chaitanya Bharathi Educational Society about the fee issue. We demand cancellation of the fee hike, and a written statement from the administration that it will not hike fees until we graduate from the college.”

Prof. Ramakrishna Reddy, the teachers’ association president, said, “It is not easy for the students to pay the fees which have been increased suddenly in the middle of the academic year. Students look at suitable infrastructure and fees at the time of admission.”

He said CBIT was started by philanthropists who are now no more. “Their children, who took over the management, want to earn more money in a short time. They did not consult anyone before increasing the fees,” Prof. Reddy said. The management has given a circular stating that students who cannot afford need not pay the fees but they were advised to wait for the court directions, he said.
