Tirupati to roll out first-ever electric double-decker bus

Tirupati: The temple city of Tirupati is poised to introduce its first-ever public transportation through an air-conditioned electric double-decker bus. This marks a significant step towards eco-friendly urban mobility.

Tirupati would be the first city in AP and the second in the South – after Hyderabad -- to operate this kind of special double-decker buses.

The EV double-decker bus is scheduled to commence its service in the city by the end of October. Following successful trial runs, there are plans for expansion of its fleet.

Valued at Rs 2 crore, the EV double-decker bus arrived in Tirupati last month and trial runs are on. The municipal corporation acquired the EV bus under the aegis of the Tirupati Smart City Corporation Ltd, a component of the central government’s Smart City project. This bus was purchased from Switch Mobility, the electric commercial vehicle arm of Ashok Leyland.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, deputy mayor, Bhumana Abhinay said MCT has collaborated with the APSRTC to facilitate the operation of this bus.

The bus will serve four routes across the city, connecting essential tourist destinations, including temples and choultries. The services are expected to commence after conclusion of the Navaratri Brahmotsavams in Tirumala, by October end.
