RPF files case against students for footboard travelling

The number of footboard travelling cases registered by RPF has increased over 15 per cent in 2017.

Chennai: After a video of school students dangerously travelling on footboard went viral, the Railway Protection Force (RPF) in Mylapore has registered a case against the students and are trying to identify them.

A group of students can be seen on the video travelling on footboard in a relatively empty train from Thiruvanmiyur MRTS station and a few of them trying to board it while on the run.

“Despite the RPF initiating measures to create awareness among college and school students, the menace of footboard travelling continues,” said Joseph, a regular commuter from Fort station.

“Students are not aware of the risk the footboard travelling carries. Many run-over deaths are also due to footboard travelling,” sources in the RPF said.

An official from RPF, Mylapore, said, “We have registered 15 cases for footboard travelling in the last two days.”

Along with Government Railway Police, RPF is also carrying out a campaign against footboard travelling. “We inform the parents and school management if we catch any student travelling on the footboard. Despite the warning, the menace continues,” the official said.

RPF is already video recording the footboard incidents and it is trying to identify the offenders by matching the images in their railway passes.

The number of footboard travelling cases registered by RPF has increased over 15 per cent in 2017.
