Hyderabad rains: Techies to log on from home

Heavy rains have resulted in severe water logging on all the roads leading to Hitec City and Gachibowli.

Hyderabad: In light of the heavy rains received over the past three days and predictions of moderate to heavy rainfall for the next two days, IT companies have asked their employees to work from home.

In order to able to stick to important project schedules and meet delivery deadlines, about 25 per cent of employees, from associate executives to senior executives, have been asked to work remotely. This decision has been made subsequent to the traffic jam in the IT corridor, where employees were stuck from Monday night until the early hours of Tuesday, and on the basis of the alerts issued by the traffic police.

Heavy rains have resulted in severe water logging on all the roads leading to Hitec City and Gachibowli. Though GHMC staff have been attempting to pump water out with help from the traffic police, the situation is yet to be brought under control.

Sundeep Kumar Maktala, the founding president of the Telangana IT association, says that 1.1 lakh of the 4.25 lakh techies employed by the 114 large and 1,283 medium and small IT companies in the city have been directed to work from home. “Usually, under such circumstances, companies announce the implementation of business continuation plans which enable techies in other cities to share the workload. However, this time the rain has not caused any auxiliary problems such as power cuts. So most companies have allowed employees to work from home,” he says.

He says that employees who have a major role to play in projects that need to be delivered at the earliest have been asked to work remotely. “Companies are coordinating with the TS government and the police department to monitor the situation on the roads,” he said.
