Hyderabad: The south-west monsoon is likely to continue beyond October 15, according to the local weather bureau, which has announced that it will continue to rain for another five days in the state. In the last few weeks, three cyclonic circulations over the Bay of Bengal have strengthened currents bringing extreme weather conditions to Telangana. The October rains have put Telangana in the surplus zone. Three weather features are being experienced on a single day — increase in day temperatures by one or two degrees above normal, high humidity of above 80 per cent, and heavy to very heavy rainfall as the day ends.
October rain blamed on strong cyclonic circulation
Mercury levels are touching 32-330 C. High temperatures and humidity are two important components for the formation of thunderclouds (cumulonimbus).
Y.K. Reddy, director of the Indian Meteorological Department, Hyderabad, said, “The south west monsoon is still active over Telangana despite September 30 being the official end of the season. The rain in October is due to a cyclonic circulation strengthening the currents bringing in heavy rains accompanied by thunder and lightning.”
The director further added that the monsoon is likely to continue beyond its official withdrawal date of October 15 (varies from year-to-year).
There is a heavy rainfall forecast for the next five days, and good rains up to the October 20. He said, “This year, 50 per cent of the heavy rainfall is due to the presence of cyclonic circulation. However, we are monitoring the rainfall patter and will declare the monsoon withdrawal whenever the rainfall ceases for a continuous period of five days” The withdrawal of the monsoon has started in Maharashtra and Gujarat and this will slowly extend to Central India and then move south to TS and AP.
