Chennai: The work at the Madras high court came to a near standstill on Tuesday as advocates abstained from attending the court proceedings, protesting against the order of transfer of Chieaf Justice Vijaya K.Tahilramani to Meghalaya High Court.

Most of the members of the Madras High Court Advocates Association, Madras Bar Association and Women Lawyers Association abstained from attending the court proceedings.

However, the judges functioned with government advocates attending the proceedings.

A group of lawyers conducted a demonstration on NSC Bose road near Aavin gate, demanding the withdrawal of the order of transfer of Chief Justice of Madras High Court.

Meanwhile, Madras high court Chief Justice Vijaya K.Tahilramani, who has tendered her resignation in protest against her transfer to the Meghalaya High Court,  did not attend the court for the second consecutive day on Tuesday.

The Chief Justice had sent her resignation to President Ram Nath Kovind with copy to Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi on September 6 after the Supreme Court collegium turned down her plea to reconsider the transfer decision of the HC Chief Justice.
