The Prime Minister is said to have promised all help and to send official teams for study the damage caused.

New Delhi: Responding to the state’s pleas, the Centre has agreed to send two teams of officials to assess the damage caused by the recent heavy rain, floods and landslides in Kodagu and Dakshina Kannada. A delegation from the state led by CM H.D.Kumaraswamy, which included JD(S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda met Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday to explain to him about the devastation in Kodagu and other parts of the Malnad and request him to announce a Rs 2000 crore relief package.

The Prime Minister is said to have promised all help and to send official teams for study the damage caused. Although BJP state chief B S Yeddyurappa and Union Ministers from the state were invited to join the delegation, they did not, according to official sources.

In its memorandum to the Centre, Karnataka noted that Kodagu had received highest rainfall in 118 years and the landslides that followed had displaced thousands of people, destroyed agricultural, horticulture and commercial crops and damaged a large number of houses, roads and bridges. The loss, it said, was around Rs 3705.87 crore.
