Poor infrastructure irks Tulasi Nagar residents

Open drains, damaged roads pose problems to denizens.

Vijayawada: Wrongly constructed side drains and damaged roads create problems for residents of Tulasi Nagar. The colony is just about a 100 metres away from Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) and under the Kanuru Panchayat limits.

The colony has, of late, been experiencing a spurt in population that has increased more than 10 times following which the local body appears to be failing in providing proper sanitation and other basic infrastructure to residents.

There is a marked increase in construction of residential apartments and individual houses and some development activities on the Bandar Road extension.

“Tulasi Nagar is located in a prime area of the city being very near to M.G. Road. Construction activity has taken a boost in the colony after the completion of the 100 feet road works joining Patakavala Road to Kanuru as alternative to Bandar Road. Even then, the local body has been neglecting the problems of denizens here,” says G.V. Ramkiran Chowdary, a colony resident.

“Officials of the panchayat department have been ignoring sanitation issues and there is no proper mechanism for collecting garbage on a daily basis. Dumper bins keep getting filled attracting stray dogs that litter garbage on to the streets. Despite of our complaints, no one is responding,” says Jasti Lakshmi Priya, a home maker.

Colony residents also complain about the poor side drains and their improper maintenance. “Colony roads get inundated with even a light rain. Majority of the streets in the colony lack proper side drains and as a result rain water accumulates on the streets for days after rain. Mosqui-toes breed on stagnated water causing a mosquito menace in colony,” says Madam Lakshminarayana, a retired central government employee in colony.

A call to include the colony into the VMC was becoming louder. “The colony which has seen a huge growth since the announcement of state capital lags in terms of infrastructure as it was still under Panchayat limits. The government should consider our problems and merge our colony under VMC limits,” requests Narayana Prasad a colony resident.
