45 doctors promoted at NIMS

45 senior teaching doctors have been promoted, and 45 assistant professors were recruited recently, filling up all vacancies.

Hyderabad: The state government has cleared 45 promotions at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences, leaving no dearth of faculty. The government has promoted 35 assistant professors as associate professors and 10 associate professors as additional professors. This has been done for the first time at the hospital, doctors said.

While senior doctors have got promoted, 45 assistant professors were recruited three months ago.

A senior doctor said promotions were being held up for long. “Out of frustration, senior doctors left the hospital. These promotions will bring confidence back into the health system as senior doctors are being given their due.”

Institute director Dr K. Manohar was pursuing the issue of promotions with the government for a year and persuaded officials that healthcare facilities would be further improved in the hospital.

Health minister Dr C. Laxma Reddy had a marathon round of meetings with Dr Manohar and health secretary Dr Rajehwar Tiwari before finalising the promotions, sources said.

Dr C. Nagesh, Nims senior orthopaedic surgeon, said, “Time bound promotions have cleared a backlog that was pending for a very long time.” All departments at Nims will now have adequate number of medical professors and treating doctors which will help reinforce confidence in the public healthcare system.
