Hyderabad: Bus diversions fail to ease congestion

Chaderghat-Malakpet-Nalgonda crossroads still a worry.

Hyderabad: There was no respite for motorists from the notorious traffic congestion along the Chaderghat-Malakpet-Nalgonda crossroads on Saturday despite nearly 50 per cent of the RTC buses being diverted away from the crowded stretch.

The proposed termination of RTC buses at Nalgonda crossroads and Abids GPO was not carried out on Saturday, with RTC officials saying they needed at least three to four more days.

Buses on the districts’ routes from Imlibun came up to Chaderghat and were diverted to-wards Nimboliadda, Moosarambagh and Dilsukhnagar, instead the original proposed diversion to Madina, Bahadurpura, Aramgarh jun-ction and Chandrayangutta and LB Nagar.

Malakpet inspector Venkat Reddy said allowing only half the buses to ply on the Chaderghat-Malakpet-Nalgonda crossroads had helped a lot but motorists stuck in traffic jams said what was needed was road widening to provide additional carriageway.

Daily commuters M. Saleemuddin and Ch. Ravinder Raju said land needed to be acquired to widen the road. There is currently a proposal to construct another rail under bridge to provide additional carriageway space but that project has been pending along with the road widening plans, they said.

Meanwhile, traffic police said the National Highway Authority of India in coordination with South Central Railway had agreed to construct another vent for the rail under bridge. But officials said the project will take at least a year or more. The Metro Rail works would be completed in four months and until then, different traffic plans might be experimented with to facilitate free flow of traffic, an official said
