The students were asked by school attender B. Ravi to help him shift an iron pole from the school ground to the storeroom. During the process, the pole touched overhead electric wires. All four of them suffered an electric shock and fell to the ground.

Other students alerted the school officials who took them to a private hospital. The three students and the attender sustained burns on their palms.

The parents of the students who were informed of the incident rushed to the hospital and demanded action against the school. Joint collector David visited the students in the hospital and assured the parents that action will be taken against the management.

The parents and student unions staged a protest outside the hospital demanding action against the school management for making students work in the school hostel. Based on a complaint filed by the parents, the police booked a case against Fathima High School.

The injured students were among the few who stayed back in the school hostel over the extended weekend. Others had gone home for the holidays that stretched from Friday to Monday.

Balala Hakkula Sangham honorary president Achyutha Rao condemned the school management for using the students as child labourers. He said the children had narrowly escaped death.
