Palakkad relieved, but rains pound Thrissur

The Palakkad district administration and the irrigation officials have decided not to open the Malampuzha dam shutters.

Thrissur/Palakkad: Though the situation eased in Palakkad, heavy rains continued to lash Thrissur on Saturday.

A total of 18,683 people are living in rescue camps. There were only 4,040 inmates in the camps in Thrissur on Friday.

The Palakkad district administration and the irrigation officials have decided not to open the Malampuzha dam shutters.

The water level on Saturday evening was 109.99 metres.

The maximum level is 115.05m and the newly-fixed ‘rule curve’ for the dam by the Dam Safety Authority for August is 112.95.

The engineers had earlier hinted at opening the dam if the water-level touches the ‘rule curve.’

Water entered several houses in Thrithala and Pattambi regions in Palakkad and several residential colonies in Palakkad town.

In Thrissur, all the major dams like Peechi, Chimmini and Vazhani are well below their full capacity and there is no possibility of their opening on Sunday.

The level in Chalakudy river did not rise much but the inflow from the Athirappilly forest has increased.

The Peringalkuthu dam upstream Athirappilly waterfalls, which overflowed in the deluge last year, has not touched its full capacity. But the sluices and crest gates of the dam have been kept open to maintain the water level at 420 metres.

Pregnant woman rescued on zip-line
The fire and rescue personnel and the police of Mannarkad rescued a pregnant woman on Saturday.

The woman Lavanya, her one-and-a-half year-old child and family members were trapped in the Pattimalam tribal settlement at Attappadi. The rescuers carried her on zip lines (with pulley and cables) across high-flowing Bhavani river.

She and her husband Murkeshan had refused to cross the river on Friday.

The woman was later shifted to Kottathara tribal hospital where she was examined by the doctors. Lavanya will soon go to Chennai where her husband is working.
