Hyderabad: Niti Aayog chief executive officer Amitabh Kant told pass-outs at the IIT-Hyderabad graduation ceremony on Friday to work towards achieving gender parity.
Speaking of having women in the workforce, Mr Kant said, “If India is to grow at 9 per cent, we must have gender parity. We must increase the participation of women in the economy and that will depend on students, many of whom will be in positions of power. You must give a place of prominence for women wherever you work.”
A total of 522 students, including 200 BTechs. and 69 PhDs, graduated during the eighth convocation of IIT-Hyderabad. Mr Kant delivered his speech over Skype. The graduating batch has 110 girl students.
Sukrut Sridhar Rao bagged the President of India Gold Medal for BTech. Manajit Das from MSc and Vanga Rohini from MTech got the institute gold medals. Sinha Vaibhav Birendrakumar secured the medal for excellence in academics and co-curricular activities (BTech).
Mr B.V.R. Mohan Reddy, chairman, IIT-H board of governors, noted that the institute had become one of the top 10 technical institutes in the country and the fifth most-preferred IIT in a span of 11 years. “This year, the institute’s best rank in JEE Mains is 202, while it was 2,800+ in 2008,” Mr Reddy said.
