Kabini dam full, floods downstream

Nanjangud, Suttur bridges submerged.

Mysuru: The heavy rain in Kerala, especially the Wyanad region, has led to heavy inflow of water into the Kabini reservoir in Karnataka, forcing it to release a huge quantity of water into the Cauvery river, which submerged the Nanjangud bridge on NH 766 on the Ooty, Kerala, Mysuru route and several low- lying areas downstream, besides the Suttur bridge. With Mysuru Deputy Commissioner, Abhiram G Shankar banning vehicular movement on the Nanjangud bridge, traffic from Ooty and Kerala was diverted to Mysuru via Hullalli and traffic from Mysuru was diverted to Nanjangud via Kadakola, Adakanahalli and Basavanapura.

A temporary relief centre has been opened at the Srikanteswara choultry in front of the Srikanteswara temple in Nanjangud. Traffic has also been banned on the Suttur bridge. The Kabini reservoir, which received an inflow of 77,000 cusecs, released 80,000 cusecs into the river, according to the dam authorities. Heavy rain in the Cauvery catchment area also led to large inflow of water into the Harangi, Hemavathi and Krishna Raja Sagar reservoirs, which too released more than their usual quantity of water into the river.

KRS, which received 47,709 cusecs, released 43,786 cusecs and its water level stood at 124.48 feet as against its capacity to hold 124.80 feet on Friday. Hemavathi had 2921.23 feet of water as against its capacity to hold 2922 feet. It received an inflow of 14,367cusecs and released 14,300 cusecs. The Harangi reservoir received an inflow of 10,373 cusecs and released 22,183, bringing its water level to 2855.67feet as against its capacity to hold 2859 feet on Friday.
