Vijayawada: Students boycott classes opposing Act on fee hike

Student organisations enforced one-day bandh in Vijayawada, Krishna district, Guntur city and other towns.

GUNTUR/VIJAYAWADA: Student organisations enforced one-day bandh in Vijayawada, Krishna district, Guntur city and other towns in the district opposing hike in fees in private and corporate institutions. In Guntur, a majority of the educational institutions remained closed due to the bandh call by SFI, PDSU, PDSO, AISF and other students organisations demanding cancellation of the proposed AP Self Finance Independent School Act, 2017, continuation of Telugu medium teaching in government schools, betterment of basic amenities in the state educational institutions. The leaders demanded cancellation of GO No. 14 and stopping closure of government schools, hostels under the rationalisation process.

The leaders of student organisations enforced bandh by forcing schools and colleges which were functioning. The leaders of the students’ unions alleged that the proposed AP Self Finance Independent School Act, 2017, gives right to the private and corporate educational institutions to decide the fee and other charges according to their interests and that it would give them a chance to hike the fee every year abnormally. They alleged that the government is promoting private and corporate educational institutions and hence was planning to introduce the new Act it proposed the new act. They further alleged that the government trying to implement detention system for 5 and 8 classes which would restrain the poor and needy students from getting education and sought cancellation of the same.

PDSO state secretary Sk Baji Saida, SFI state president Y Ramu, PDSU state president S Ravichandra and other leaders alleged that AP government issued GO: 14 for the implementation of English medium in government schools by cancelling Telugu medium. They demanded continuation of Telugu medium with English medium for the promotion of native and mother tongue Telugu language. They demanded filling of vacant teachers and lecturers posts in government schools and colleges, providing drinking water, toilets, benches, playgrounds, classrooms, books and uniforms to the students without fail.
