Karnataka: College essay sparks row
Opposition Chief Whip in the Legislative Council Capt. Ganesh Karnik has condemned the essay and has demanded that the varsity remove it.

Mangaluru: Yuddha: Ondu Udyama,' (War: A Business) an essay by writer Baraguru Ramachandrappa which has been included as a Kannada lesson for students of first year BSc and BSc (Animation) of Mangaluru University, has unleashed a storm in social media.
Opposition Chief Whip in the Legislative Council Capt. Ganesh Karnik has condemned the essay and has demanded that the varsity remove it. “Universities should teach patriotism and nationalism . But it looks like the university is trying to make students anti-nationals by including the essay, which shows soldiers in bad light. Every subject has a board of studies which decides the syllabus. The Mangaluru University Vice Chancellor has to clarify the yardstick based on which the writeup has been included as a lesson" he demanded.
"Baraguru is the president of Karnataka Patya Pusthaka Samithi but has started questioning Indian culture and practices. His personal thoughts have been included as a lesson and imposed. As a retired army officer I condemn this," he said. Sources said the writer has referred to a friend in the Army in the lesson, who reportedly told him that soldiers who have to stay for long periods away from their families, often resort to acts of rape.
