Pub brawl: Shanthinagar MLA Haris' son in a soup
BENGALURU: Shanthinagar MLA N.A. Haris’s son Umar has landed in a controversy following allegations that he was involved in a brawl at a pub in Shanthinagar in Ashoknagar police station limits on Tuesday evening. According to the unconfirmed sources, Umar was present at Plan B pub, along with his friends, and had reportedly attacked a youth and injured him. However, when Deccan Chronicle contacted the Ashoknagar police, they refuted the allegation and said that though it was true that the MLA’s son was present at the pub, but he was not involved in the altercation.
However, the jurisdictional Ashoknagar police is also being accused of cover up by refusing to enter a complaint against Umar. When this newspaper contacted DCP (Central) Sandeep Patil, he said, “No one has come forward to lodge a complaint in this regard. As for media reports that the police tried to hush up the case, it is not true. If anybody is aggrieved in this case, they can approach me. I have directed Cubbon Park ACP to look into the matter.”
Upset over the news about his son’s alleged involvement in a brawl, Mr Haris told DC, “I am deeply pained and hurt to see that my son’s name has been dragged unnecessarily in the controversy. My son along with his friends had gone to eat lunch at the pub as there was an offer going on. But, he wasn’t involved in any altercation and had left the place after finishing lunch. Besides that there is no complaint against him.”
ACP Cubbon Park Sub-division A.V. Gaonkar, who is investigating the probe, told Deccan Chronicle, “The incident took place around 4 pm at Plan B pub. Umar was present in the pub, but according to preliminary investigation he was sitting at other end. According to the pub manager there was a minor altercation involving other customers. Umar had left the pub. The manager also told the police that there was no physical assault as reported in the news. We have asked for the CCTV footage and will verify whether Umar was involved in a scuffle or not as reported by a section of the media.”
According to the police, the incident came to light after they received the information about verbal altercation at the pub. “When the team of police reached the spot, the youths who were involved had left the pub. According to the pub manager, a group of youths got involved in a verbal altercation over a trivial row. However, the manager clarified to police that no assault took place,” a police inspector of Ashok Nagar maintained. The Ashoknagar police have registered a case and begun investigation.
