Irom Sharmila gets security cover

Sharmila, 44, has been put on liquid diet and is under supervision at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences.

Imphal: Manipur’s “Iron Lady” Irom Sharmila, who broke her 16-year-long fast on Tuesday and decided to enter electoral politics, was on Wednesday given security after some groups opposed her decision even as she said she had been misunderstood.

Ms Sharmila, 44, has been put on liquid diet and is under supervision at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences.

Armed police was posted at the hospital in the wake of the security threat to the rights activist with some groups opposing her decision to end the fast, a police officer said.

Ms Sharmila sought to clarify her stand on her move to enter electoral politics. After ending the fast, Ms Sharmila had said she wanted to become the chief minister so that she could repeal the contentious AFSPA.

“They have misunderstood me, about my real being,” Ms Sharmila said. “They have been seeing me from their own point of view without connecting with what is in my heart,” she added.
