Independence Day: Karnataka police leave nothing to chance
Bengaluru: The State has been put on alert in the wake of the forthcoming Independence Day and the bomb blast in the court premises in Mysuru last week. Director General and Inspector General of Police Om Prakash told Deccan Chronicle that he has instructed all the unit officers - the district superintendents of police and the commissioners to step up vigilance in public places and coordinate with the private security agencies, which have deployed their personnel at private places to ensure safety of citizens and property.
“Security at important public places has been stepped up. I have issued detailed instructions to all the SPs and commissioners to hold security related meetings with their officers and beef up security at crowded places such as airports, bus stands and railway stations,” said the police chief.
They must ensure that CCTV cameras are functioning. The police can also inquire if the CCTV cameras at private offices and buildings are functional. The private security agencies have also been instructed to maintain high vigil and liaise with their personnel, who have been deployed at important private places,” he added.
He added barring an emergency no officer will go on leave till the Independence Day. “Dog squads have been pressed into service and extra vigilance will be maintained in all sensitive areas throughout the State,” said the DG&IGP.
320 prisoners to be released
Thanks to the Supreme Court recently vacating a stay on the release of state prisoners, as many as 320 prisoners, including 48 women inmates, serving life sentences in various jails of Karnataka, will be released on Independence Day. This was announced by the Law and Parliamentary affairs minister T. B. Jayachandra here on Wednesday. After nearly a gap of decade, the state government has proposed to use its power to grant remission on Independence Day and Republic Day to convicts with good conduct. Jayachandra said that woman inmates, who have already completed 10 years in jail, and the male inmates, who have served 14 years in prison,will be released.
