Polavaram project expected to get 14L cusecs water

Godavari river witnessed heavy floods early in July resulting in huge inflow of water from upstream river into Polavaram project

Vijayawada: As Godavari river witnesses heavy floods following heavy rainfall in its catchment areas, Polavaram irrigation project is expected to get 14 lakh cusecs of water as at present nearly nine lakh cusecs of water reached the project by 7 pm on Monday.

Minister for water resources Ambati Rambabu, along with senior officials, visited the Polavaram project at Polavaram in Eluru district on Monday and took stock of the flood situation at the project site.

Later, he said that the Godavari river witnessed heavy floods early in July resulting in huge inflow of water from upstream river into Polavaram project and added that they were expecting nearly 14 lakh cusecs of water to reach the Polavaram project in due course of time.

The minister said that since the lower coffer dam was not constructed to the safe level, flood water from the river entered into the project site through lower coffer dam affecting the progress of ongoing works.

Referring to the recent visit of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation officials to make study on diaphragm wall, he said that their works to find out the health of the diaphragm wall and to come up with proposals to carry out repair works to the damaged portions of the diaphragm wall or to take up a new diaphragm wall parallel to the existing one, might be affected due to the floods.
