Bengaluru: Unholy nexus behind building collapse
Bengaluru: Buildings collapse in the city because of an unholy nexus between engineers and contractors, and engineers and landlords. Wednesday’s Hutchins Road accident, which claimed the lives of five people, too revealed such an arrangement between the landlord and the engineer, sources in the BBMP said. It is said that not a single unauthorised building can come up in the city without the notice of engineers.
Work inspectors who are on rounds take note of cement, sand and mortar stocked near houses and the very next moment the information reaches the engineer.
Then begins negotiations and greasing of palms, sources said. Earlier, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Task Force was entrusted with the task of cracking the whip on unauthorised constructions. After intense protests, BMTF's police powers were withdrawn leading to a boom in unauthorised constructions. The sources suggested that unless guilty engineers are brought to book, such unauthorised constructions cannot be stopped.
