Kochi: For much part of the probe into the actor abduction and sexual assault case, the Special Investigation Team had no clue about the conspiracy angle though they strongly suspected that Pulsar Suni and his gang had acted on the direction of an "influential person". This was evident the way Suni constantly managed to dodge questions and change his statements given to the Investigation team which filed the first chargesheet 60 days after the incident in which it said there was no proof of any conspiracy.
It was then that the SIT decided to do something out of the box to make a headway in the probe into the conspiracy angle. Sources said it was the brainchild of probe team head Inspector General Dinendra Kashyap to send a petty criminal to share the prison cell of Pulsar Suni at the Kakkanad district jail. Jinson slowly became friends with Suni who became more open to his cell mates after the initial month of his custody. He was witness to Suni making phone calls to Nadirshah and manager Appunni and once replied to his query that the "prominent person" could not afford to isolate him.
Finally in June 30, cops took him to the Aluva Magistrate and made him record secret statement before the court. Jinson then revealed that Suni had told him of involvement of more persons and their role in conspiracy behind abduction of the actor based on which the cops reopened the case. The cops also are learnt to have taken a lenient stand in jail allowing Suni to freely interact with his cell mates. Suni later made another cell mate to write a letter and made the phone calls demanding money. "One of the main evidence is the phone call records which proved Suni was trying to contact the actor and asking for the money promised," sources said.
The SIT also played smart by getting police custody of Suni on the ground of probe into a smuggling of mobile phone into the jail. However, they interrogated on the conspiracy part encountering him with the phone call records and the statement of Jinson. Suni had no option but to spill the beans in the nearly 10-hour interrogation at a secret location on Sunday.
