Kerala: CPM takes up property dispute

CPM has commenced yet another protest in the 'Makkal Samaram' model in Nadapuram area.

KOZHIKODE: CPM has commenced yet another protest in the 'Makkal Samaram' model in Nadapuram area, intervening in the Muslim family property issues. The indefinite protest, started by its women's wing, Janadhipathya Mahila Association (JMA), is before the house of Dayarathaamkandy Anthru (57) in Kaiveli. JMA is for providing rights on the properties to Mr Anthru's son Rauf and the protection of Mr Rauf's wife Raseena and her two kids.

According to the protesters, Mr Rauf, Ms Raseena and the kids were forcibly evicted from the house by Mr Anthru. Mr Rauf is abroad now. "Mr Rauf's parents and sisters harassed Ms Raseena both mentally and physically in the name of her poor economic condition. Later they were evicted," says JMA leader and former MLA, K.K. Lathika. The intervention of the local mosque committee and political parties failed, and Ms Raseena approached the CPM.

Meanwhile, Mr Anthru says he had sweated out 20 years in the Gulf to feed his family consisting of wife Mariyu, the son and two daughters. "A huge amount of debt is yet to be cleared which was spent for the daughters' marriage and securing a job for Rauf. Raseena used to torture my wife for handing over the right on the house in the name of Rauf," he alleged.

Further, he said she had encroached eight cents of his land and had started construction of a house. But Ms Lathika said Mr Anthru had agreed to provide land for Mr Rauf but later prevented through court order when the construction work started. The protest entered the fourth day on Monday. In 1996, CPM had started sensational 'Makkal Samaram' at the lodge owned by Valiya Kannoth Anthru Haji in Nadapuram, fighting for the rights of the Haji's children on properties.

The protest later boomeranged on CPM as it was observed as an unwanted agitation which didn't take into account the complex Muslim personal laws on property rights. The claim on the property rights was raised by the Haji's children in his ex-wife. The protest continued for years spearheaded by the late leader A. Kanaran.
