Drivers at fault, says Hyderabad Metro Rail authorities
Hyderabad: Hyderabad Police has identified 194 accident-prone spots, and Cyberabad Police 58, and submitted reports to Hyderabad Metro Rail authorities on measures to be taken to prevent accidents, but HMR has initiated no action so far on these reports, choosing instead to blame motorists and constitute its own committees to produce yet more reports on safety measures. HMR officials said that they had taken all precautions to ensure that accidents don’t happen around metro construction sites and that the Sunday night accident was the result of rash driving by the biker, not lack of safety measures.
Police say, however, that all it takes is for HMR to put up signages and reflectors to prevent accidents. HMR officials said they had received the police reports but they will not implement them. Instead, HMR has constituted its own committee, comprising officers from the three police commissionerates, the GHMC, the transport department, L&T, HMR and an independent traffic expert.
“Except in places where work is in progress, accidents are due to speeding. Even at work sites, safety precautions have been taken and signages put up,” a senior official said. He added that the HMR committee is inspecting all Metro Rail stretches, all the pillars and their position on the roads. “Once the committee submits its final report, we will implement all the recommendations,” he said, adding that the reports submitted by police have identified accident-prone areas “from their perspective”, but the report of the committee appointed by HMR would analyse those reports and prepare its own recommendations.
