Plan to divide Bangalore University hangs fire

But as these two universities lack infrastructure, staff and other facilities, the operations would begin from the next academic year.

Bengaluru: Even though first legislation on the division of the Bangalore University (BU) was passed four years ago, the students and colleges still need to wait for one more year to see the two new universities starting operation.

According to state higher education department sources the proposed Bengaluru North and Central Universities will not start their operations this year.
They said that recently the state government had appointed T.D. Kemparaju as the new special officer for the proposed Bangalore North University and Prof. S. Japhet as the special officer for the Bangalore Central University.

But as these two universities lack infrastructure, staff and other facilities, the operations would begin from the next academic year (2017-18). It may be recalled that first legislation on the division of BU was cleared by the state legislature in the year 2012, when C.T. Ravi was the higher education minister.

In the year 2014, state government decided to trifurcate the university paving way to formation of two more universities - Bengaluru North and Bengaluru Central. An officer from the state higher education department told this newspaper that there is no clarity on the very structure of these two new universities.

“Some want them in line with existing university while others want them to launch specialised courses/schemes. Even though these two universities were allotted colleges for affiliation, they could not start the process this year. This means parent university continues to manage all the colleges and students this year,” he explained.
