Government firm on more power to police

He said that there was no need for a CBI inquiry into the twin political murders in Periya.

Thiruvananthapuram: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has said that magisterial powers will be given to the commissioners in Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram by retaining the magisterial powers of the collectors. IG- level officers will be appointed in this post.

Replying to the discussion on the demand for grants for home department in the Assembly on Monday, he said the decision for creating such a police commissionerate was taken by the UDF government in 2013.

The Justice K.T. Thomas committee had also recommended it. This would ensure that station house officers will be CIs in place of SIs. Moreover, there would be an additional post of DIG in between the DySPs and IGs in these cities.

He said that there was no need for a CBI inquiry into the twin political murders in Periya. The Crime Branch has started an inquiry into the postal ballot incident and one policeman Vyshak was arrested in connection with it, he said.

He criticised the Opposition for saying that the present government was going on a borrowing spree. However, the borrowing during the time of UDF was 91.51 percent. It has come down to 60 percent now, said Mr Vijayan.
