Chennai: Kidnapped businessman freed after hostage car crash
Chennai: A 35-year-old businessman, allegedly kidnapped at Kodunagiyur, Chennai on Sunday evening, was rescued by the police after the car in which he was kidnapped met with an accident on the Tindivanam-Chennai highway in the small hours of Monday.
Police said that in the crash one of the suspects died on the spot while three other suspects are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Tindivanam.
Abdul Karim (35), a resident of Kodungaiyur, runs a second hand car business. “On Sunday evening, Karim was returning home after closing the shop. A gang in a car got in front of him and stopped him. Around four persons got down from the car held a knife to his throat and kidnapped the man,” said an investigation officer.
Nobody had noticed the incident. After an hour, a call was made to his wife Aiysa with the gang demanding cash as ransom. Based on Aiysha's complaint special teams were formed to nab the culprits.
The gang which kidnapped the man was travelling to Puduchery. However, on spotting a police patrol team on the way to Puduchery, they drove the car towards Chennai via Tindivanam. When they were on highway the car was being driven to overtake a private bus. But the bus braked and the car rammed into the bus. In the impact, the main suspect Bashir Khan of Kodungaiyur died on the spot. The Tindivanam police rescued the others and admitted them to a private hospital.
Investigations revealed that Abdul Karim had borrowed Rs. 10 lakh from Bashir Khan a year ago and had not paid the money back, despite several warnings by Bashir.
Following which Bashir, his brother Rasool Khan and his friends Prakash and Amudha kidnapped Abdul.
The police arrested Amudha and Prakash who had sustained minor injuries in the accident. Inquiries are on.
