Hyderabad: Litter piles up at Metro Rail medians

Public apathy blamed for trash.

Hyderabad: Metro Rail medians are the new litter points. Plastic bottles, beer bottles, tea cups, takeaway cartons, empty chips packets are being dropped at the medians from Miyapur to Begumpet. At some places, black garbage bags filled with trash have been thrown.

The median between Ameerpet and Begumpet has a significant number of alcohol bottles.

The Jubilee Hills check post has a well -maintained median with flowers and next to it is the median that has been turned into a dumpyard.

“It is sad to see that people are dropping PET bottles at medians. The medians which are now welcoming people with flowers, if neglected, may have food packets and bottles. This is one thing that we cannot blame on the officials because it is public apathy,” said shopkeeper Mr Santosh Kumar.

Plastic bottles and alcohol bottles apart from plastic covers make up the majority of the litter. While some homeless people leave the stuff at the medians, some pedestrians quickly drop the trash while crossing the road. “Some lazy people who cannot take the time to hold their trash till they reach a dustbin,” said student Sai Prasanna.

While government is asking people to stop using single-use plastics, these are the ones found at the medians.

“It may not be visible from far, but litter is litter. There is no such thing as less litter, because the cost on the environment is going to be high. The “don’t-care” attitude of our people is a major problem because they assume someone else will clean it up,” said Mr T.G. Raghavendra, an expert in solid waste management.
